2. ACTIVITIES COVERED BY THIS AGREEMENT
This agreement applies to participation in any activities provided or supervised by the business, including but not limited to:
- Horseback riding lessons and instruction.
- Guided and unguided trail rides, where permitted.
- Horse handling, grooming, tacking, leading, mounting, and dismounting.
- Groundwork, horse care, and equine educational activities.
- Riding camps, clinics, demonstrations, and other horse-related activities.
- Being present in or around barns, pastures, arenas, paddocks, trails, and other equine facilities.
This agreement applies to activities on the business’s property and at off-site locations where the business conducts or supervises activities.
3. ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF INHERENT RISKS
I understand that horses are large, powerful, and unpredictable animals. Participation in equine activities involves inherent risks that cannot be completely eliminated, even when reasonable precautions are taken.
These risks include, but are not limited to:
- Falling from a horse, being thrown, or losing control.
- Being kicked, bitten, stepped on, struck, crushed, or trampled.
- A horse spooking, bucking, rearing, bolting, stumbling, or behaving unexpectedly.
- Collisions with other horses, riders, people, trees, fences, obstacles, or other objects.
- Uneven, slippery, rocky, muddy, or otherwise hazardous terrain.
- Weather conditions, environmental hazards, insects, and wildlife.
- Equipment failure, saddle movement, tack malfunction, or improper fit.
- Injuries occurring while mounting, dismounting, grooming, leading, or handling horses.
- Serious bodily injury, permanent disability, emotional distress, property damage, or death.
I understand that the business cannot guarantee the behavior of any horse or eliminate every hazard associated with equine activities.
I voluntarily choose to participate and acknowledge that I have been informed of these risks.
4. RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, I voluntarily assume the inherent risks associated with the activities described in this agreement.
I release and agree not to hold liable the business, its owners, operators, employees, instructors, volunteers, agents, property owners, and representatives (collectively, the “Released Parties”) for claims arising from the inherent risks of equine activities, to the extent permitted by law.
This release is intended to apply to claims for personal injury, property damage, disability, or death arising from participation in these activities, including negligence claims only to the extent such a release is legally enforceable.
Nothing in this agreement is intended to waive liability that cannot legally be waived, including liability arising from gross negligence, intentional misconduct, or other conduct for which a release is prohibited by law.
I understand that this agreement does not guarantee that the Released Parties will be protected from every claim.
5. PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITIES & SAFETY RULES
I agree to:
- Follow all instructions given by the instructor, trail guide, and business personnel.
- Behave responsibly and avoid actions that may frighten or endanger horses or other participants.
- Disclose relevant riding experience, limitations, and information necessary to determine my suitability for an activity.
- Wear appropriate footwear, clothing, and safety equipment as required by the business.
- Refrain from riding or handling horses while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or any substance that affects safe participation.
- Report unsafe conditions, equipment concerns, injuries, or unusual horse behavior promptly.
- Follow all mounting, dismounting, grooming, handling, and trail safety instructions.
- Accept that the instructor or guide may stop, modify, or refuse participation when safety concerns arise.
The business reserves the right to refuse or discontinue participation if a participant does not follow safety instructions or cannot safely participate.
6. HELMET POLICY & ACKNOWLEDGMENT
The business strongly recommends that every participant wear a properly fitted, securely fastened equestrian helmet designed for horseback riding and meeting an appropriate recognized safety standard.
I understand that horseback riding can cause serious head injuries, including traumatic brain injury or death, and that wearing an appropriate helmet may reduce, but does not eliminate, the risk of injury.
I understand that a bicycle helmet, hard hat, or other non-equestrian headgear may not provide equivalent protection.
Participant helmet selection:
☐ I will wear my own helmet.
☐ I decline to wear a helmet.
If I decline to wear a helmet, I acknowledge that I have been informed of the potential risks of riding without one and accept responsibility for my decision to the extent permitted by law.
I understand that signing this acknowledgment does not eliminate the business’s legal responsibilities, override its safety policies, or guarantee that any release of liability is enforceable.
The business may require a helmet for any activity and may refuse to permit riding without one.
7. ADDITIONAL HELMET ACKNOWLEDGMENT FOR MINORS
Complete this section if the participant is under 18 years of age and a parent or legal guardian requests that the minor ride without a helmet.
Minor’s Full Name: ___________________________________________
Parent/Legal Guardian’s Full Name: _____________________________
I am the parent or legal guardian of the minor identified above. I understand that horseback riding without a properly fitted equestrian helmet increases the risk of serious head injury, permanent disability, or death.
I have been informed of the business’s helmet recommendation and understand the potential consequences of riding without a helmet.
My decision regarding helmet use is indicated below:
☐ I authorize the minor to ride without a helmet, only if the business permits this under its safety policies and applicable law.
☐ I understand that the business may refuse to allow the minor to ride without a helmet, regardless of this acknowledgment.
☐ I understand that this acknowledgment documents my decision but does not waive the minor’s legal rights or release the business from liability that cannot legally be waived.

Important: The business retains the right to require helmets for all minors or all participants. A parent’s signature does not require the business to allow helmet-free riding.

Emergency Contact Name: ______________________________________
Emergency Contact Phone: _____________________________________

I understand that the business does not provide medical care and that I am responsible for medical expenses incurred by the participant, subject to applicable law and insurance coverage.
